Executor Guide
Cancel or Transfer Subscriptions
⏱ 2–4 hours
Rules and timelines vary by state. This guide covers general steps that apply in most situations.
Consult an estate attorney in your state for specific legal requirements.
What you'll need
- Access to email accounts (to find subscription confirmation emails)
- Credit card or bank statements (to identify recurring charges)
- Login credentials where available
Steps
- Review bank and credit card statements for the past 3 months to identify all recurring charges. Look for monthly and annual subscriptions.
- Categorize subscriptions: streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Spotify), software (Microsoft 365, Adobe), news and media, fitness and health apps, cloud storage, and any memberships.
- Cancel each subscription through the service's website or app where possible. Most have a cancellation option in account settings.
- For subscriptions where you don't have login credentials, contact the service's customer support with a death certificate — most will cancel and issue a pro-rated refund.
- For annual subscriptions paid in advance, ask about pro-rated refunds for the unused portion.
- Consider which subscriptions might be worth keeping temporarily — cloud storage accounts may contain important photos or documents that need to be downloaded first.
- Cancel or freeze the payment method (credit card) only after all subscriptions have been addressed — canceling the card first can create complications.
Tips
- Amazon Prime, Apple subscriptions, and Google services often have family sharing — check whether dependents are using these services before canceling.
- Download any important content (photos, documents, purchased media) before closing accounts.
- Some services (Apple, Google, Facebook) have legacy contact or memorial account options.
When to get professional help
Subscription cancellations generally do not require professional assistance. If a company refuses to cancel or refund without proper authorization, a brief letter from an estate attorney usually resolves the issue.
